Clues Ltd's Armoury

We're often asked which bits of hardware and software we use and recommend for any given task. Here are the most common replies we give. Please note, unless stated otherwise, we have no vested interests with the projects and companies listed below, we just like their stuff.

Networks:

We like Cisco for high-end switching and routing kit, DrayTek and Linksys for consumer-end access gear, and Lightpointe and OSBRiDGE for long-distance high-speed wireless and laser connectivity.

We colocate our equipment in multiple datacenters on diverse AS systems, giving full resiliency in the case of a power or network outage at any point. We take colocation services with Ore Networks, Webtapestry, Servology, Bogons, and Venus Business Communications. We also take virtual hosting services with Bytemark and Bitfolk.

Servers:

We use computer hardware from three companies: Pyramid, Penguin Computing, and Dell. Pyramid provide superb quality builds at very reasonable prices, they are also very Linux friendly indeed. From Penguin Computing we purchased our original production server, postel, and our second server, Shannon, still in service today.

Results (Software):

We use Linux and our preferred distributions are Debian and Redhat.

Our mail system is built on Exim and Courier. For reading mail on Linux we use Mutt or Pine on the command line - when using a GUI, the choice is between Mozilla or Thunderbird. We all like Squirrelmail for webmail, and Perl for automation.

The only webserver we use is Apache and we're using the 2.0 branch for integration with Subversion. If you want a fast, stable, secure and well designed FTP server look no further than ProFTPD.

The quotes you see at the bottom of each page have been collected from various sources and are served out of a PostgreSQL database. Postgres is mature, stable and provides a fully featured SQL environment. The site itself is written in PHP.

For backing up, we like AMANDA. We don't often need to use anti-virus software, but when we do, we use F-Prot. For remote support we use OpenSSH or PuTTY or sometimes FreeS/WAN and for Windows machines, Real VNC.
